n This Day in American History
On Feb. 22, 1980, the U.S. hockey team, a massive underdog, defeats the Soviet team at the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York, in front of thousands of frenzied fans. The Soviet team had taken gold in five of the past six Olympics, but was unable to match the youthful energy of the American team, which was largely made up of college students. After the so-called “Miracle On Ice,” the U.S. team went on to beat Finland to take the gold medal. The team’s story was made into the 2004 movie, “Miracle On Ice,” starring Kurt Russell.
