On July 11, 1976 the seventh anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic moon landing, the Viking I lander becomes the first spacecraft to land on Mars. Launched the previous August, Viking 1’s journey to the red planet took nearly a year. The probe sends back the first close-up images of the Martian surface.

On July 19, 1980, the Summer Olympics began in Moscow. The U.S. and 65 other countries boycotted the games to protest the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan the previous December. In response, the Soviet Union led a 14-nation boycott of the 1984 games held in Los Angeles.
